On Tuesday, 4 February, thirteen men from Ulverstone, Don, Penguin, Devonport, Latrobe and Burnie gathered at The River Arms Hotel to attend a Men’s Table Entrée, joining a growing national community. The Men’s Table is a grassroots not-for-profit, focused on connecting men and creating a supportive place for them to get stuff off their chest.
Since becoming a registered charity in 2019, there are now over 220 Tables across Australia where 8-12 men meet once a month over a simple meal to share openly about their lives, their challenges, their highs and lows with the same group of men who they learn to know, like and trust.
“We’d had some local interest over the past little while so it was decided that Ulverstone should have its own Table,” says Bill Karametos, the Regional Host who ran the Entrée. “It can be tough to navigate life if you try to do it on your own. And even for men who have a great group of mates, sometimes those deeper conversations just don’t happen. So we try to create a confidential, non-judgemental space where men can share their thoughts and experiences, to support and learn from one another.”
Men join a Table for a range of reasons – to meet new people, enjoy a different kind of conversation, contribute to other men or because they are struggling with the bumps and scrapes of life.
“All men of all ages are welcome,” Bill says. “It’s a great support to have others around us as we journey through life.”
